Day 1: Exploring the Capital City of San Jose

A cityscape featuring a cluster of modern high-rise buildings and skyscrapers is seen from a slightly elevated viewpoint. In the foreground, lush green trees and street lamps with intricate designs frame the view. The urban area is surrounded by a mix of greenery, residential areas, and commercial buildings, with distant hills visible under a partly cloudy sky, providing a scenic backdrop.
Start your Costa Rica trip by landing at Juan Santamaria Airport, exploring San Jose’s Barrio Amon, Teatro Nacional, Gold Museum, and Mercado Central.

We recommend you land at the Juan Santamaria Airport, the San Jose International Airport (SJO) that is closest to the capital city of San Jose, in the central valley. Start your journey in Costa Rica by exploring San Jose. Begin your day by taking a trip around the Barrio Amon area, located in the city’s historic center. Here you’ll discover vibrant colonial buildings, tiny cafés, numerous restaurants with diverse cuisine, and enchanting art galleries.

Teatro Nacional

You should not pass up the opportunity to see the renowned Teatro Nacional, which is a superb neoclassical theater that showcases the substantial cultural heritage of Costa Rica. A cultural institution that showcases Costa Rican art, the theater was built in 1897 and serves as a venue for artistic performances. The Teatro Nacional is a clear demonstration of the nation’s commitment to the arts, both in terms of its visually magnificent construction and its superb interior design.

The Gold Museum

Next to the Teatro Nacional is where you will find the Gold Museum, which we recommend you visit as your next destination. The magnificent collection of gold items that can be found in this museum, as well as the unique insights it offers into the pre-Columbian history of Costa Rica, are both highlights of the museum. Your awareness of the indigenous cultures that contributed to the formation of this dynamic nation will deepen as you study the exhibits that are housed there. The gold items, which are among the finest in the world, are painstakingly created, so make sure to spend your time examining them.

Mercado Central

Proceed to the Mercado Central, situated a few blocks away from Teatro National. This is a lively marketplace filled with regional specialties, handmade goods, and typical souvenirs. Savor a classic Costa Rican breakfast of gallo pinto, or rice and beans. Make sure to visit a soda (a traditional small restaurant) to sample the country’s favorite dish, “casado”, which consists of a substantial plate of rice, beans, plantains, salad, and a choice of protein.

After lunch, go to Paseo Colon, where there are multiple rental car providers, rent a car for the next 4 days, and head to Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the lush rainforests of Costa Rica. This beautiful rainforest, just 18,3 kilometers (11,3 miles) from San Jose downtown, is overflowing with a rich array of flora and wildlife. Take a guided hike around the park and take out your camera to take photos of a wide variety of tropical plant species, colorful toucans, and other incredible birds and entertaining monkeys.
