Cerro Chirripo National Park

Don't forget to book your vacation rentals with us

While many visitors come to Costa Rica for its stunning beaches and tropical rainforests, Costa Rica’s impressive mountain ranges are a must for high-altitude seekers and hiking enthusiasts. The largest mountain range in Costa Rica — the Talamanca Mountain Range — is home to several stunning peaks in Costa Rica, including Cerro Chirripo — the tallest mountain in Costa Rica!

Cerro Chirripo sits within Cerro Chirripo National Park, a 125,600-acre park created to protect the country’s highest mountain and its five distinct ecological zones, including lowland wet forest, cloud forest, and an alpine tundra ecosystem. If you love ultra-challenging hikes, off-the-beaten-path adventures, and remote destinations — this park should be a must-visit during your trip to Costa Rica.

Overview of Cerro Chirripó National Park in Costa Rica

Before visiting Chirripo National Park, here are a few things that you should know:

Location

Cerro Chirripo National Park is a protected area within the Talamanca Mountains in southern Costa Rica, about 80 miles (130 km) from San Jose. To reach Cerro Chirripo National Park from San Jose, take the Inter-American Highway south through Cartago, then travel over Cerro de la Muerte to San Isidro del General — the nearest town to the park entrance (about 30 minutes to one hour from the park).
This national park actually spans three provinces — San Jose, Limon, and Cartago. Its primary access point and ranger station is located within the small mountain town of San Gerardo de Rivas.

Hours

Cerro Chirripo National Park is open from 8 AM to 12 PM and 1 PM to 4 PM daily. The ranger station is closed from 12 PM to 1 PM. Reservations are mandatory for hikers and must be reserved online through SINAC. Hikers must check in at the park office in San Gerardo de Rivas by 4 PM on the day of their hike to obtain an official hiking permit and wristband. Hiking reservations are available Monday through Friday.

It’s recommended to book your permit 3–6 months in advance — especially during the dry season, on weekends, and over holidays like Easter, when only 60 hikers are allowed on the trail at a time. Have personal information for each member of your group ready, including full names, passport numbers, and dates of birth, when applying for permits. Many vetted tour companies offer guided hikes of Cerro Chirripo, which is strongly recommended for visitors by the park.

Cost

The entrance fee for Cerro Chirripo National Park is $18 USD, which is applicable for each day spent in the park.

Popular Attractions & Things to Do in Chirripó National Park

#1

Cerro Chirripó

Cerro Chirripo is the highest peak in Costa Rica, towering at 12,536 feet (3,821 meters). It’s actually the second-tallest peak in Central America, surpassed only by Tajumulco Volcano in Guatemala. Even if you don’t plan on hiking, visiting the park to catch a glimpse of this impressive landmark is worth the trip alone.

#2

Chirripo Summit Trail

Climbing Cerro Chirripó is, of course, the main attraction in Chirripó National Park. The main hike to the summit spans approximately 11 miles (18 km) and boasts an elevation gain of nearly 10,000 feet — making it an extremely challenging trek that should only be attempted by experienced hikers.

The hike to the summit from the start of the trail usually takes 5–10 hours. Most hikers split the trek into two days, using one day to ascend to Crestones Base Camp (which sits at more than 11,000 feet elevation), and the next day to hike the rest of the way to the summit and back down the mountain.
Though the climb is a challenge, the views are worth it. From the top of the peak on a clear morning, you can see both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea — from one side of Costa Rica to the other!

#3

Cloud Forests & High-Altitude Ecosystems

Cerro Chirripo National Park is famous for its ecological diversity and glacial landforms, including more than 30 lakes of glacial origin. Its diverse habitats are a result of variations in climate, topography, soil, type, and altitude, ranging from lowland wet forests to high-elevation alpine tundras. They’re fascinating to explore during a visit to the park!

#4

Birdwatching & Wildlife Viewing

Chirripo National Park is home to over 400 species of birds, making it a prime location for birdwatching. Since this park spans multiple elevations, birding enthusiasts can spot everything from hummingbirds and woodpeckers at lower elevations to raptors at high elevations. You can also spot the resplendent quetzal within the park — a colorful resident of the cloud forests in Costa Rica.

In addition to birds, this park also contains more than 260 species of amphibians and reptiles, including salamanders, frogs, snakes, and lizards, and several mammals, including spider monkeys at lower elevations and tapirs, pumas, and jaguars at mid- to high elevations. It’s an excellent place to spot wildlife and animals!

#5

Natural Hot Springs

Need to relax and unwind after hiking in Chirripo National Park? If so, visiting the thermal hot springs just outside the park is a fantastic idea.

Though technically located outside the park in the nearby village of San Gerardo de Rivas, the most popular hot spring is just a short one-mile walk (about 15 minutes) from the park’s ranger station. This hot spring is located on private property, so prepare to pay a small entrance fee.

Best Time to Visit Cerro Chirripó National Park

The best time to visit Chirripo National Park is during the dry season, from December to April. Although this is the busiest and most popular time to visit the park, the trails are usually not muddy — offering ideal hiking conditions — and the skies are clear, offering the most spectacular views!

If you plan to hike Cerro Chirripo during the rainy season, get an early start for the best hiking conditions — most showers roll in during the early afternoon.

What to Bring Chirripó National Park

  • Layered Clothing — Because of the altitude, temperatures can be much cooler in the mountains than on the coast (sometimes, temperatures can drop below freezing!). Dress in layers to prepare for cold weather, and be sure to bring a rain jacket for unexpected storms.
  • Camping & Hiking Gear — If you’re planning to hike Cerro Chirripo, be sure to bring plenty of food and water, sturdy hiking boots, safety gear, and other necessary gear for this multi-day trek. You can book accommodations at Crestones Base Camp, which costs $35 per person per night for bunk beds and cold water showers. Meals at the camp cost $10 to 13 per person.
  • Altitude Sickness — Altitude sickness is a real risk for hikers ascending Cerro Chirripo. To help your body acclimate to the elevation, try to spend 1–2 days resting at an intermediate elevation (between 6,000 and 8,000 feet) before hiking and maintain a slow and steady pace. If you’re prone to altitude sickness, consider bringing an altitude sickness medication.
