Playa Flamingo (Flamingo Beach) is one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful beaches. This world-famous crescent shaped beach is located on the Pacific northwest coast, in the province of Guanacaste. It’s entire 1 km length is covered with white powdery sand that feels amazing between your toes. The water is crystal clear and warm all year ’round. It literally is like bathing in paradise!
For me, one of the most compelling features of the Costa Rican beaches is that they are largely unspoiled. Playa Flamingo is no exception. There is only one hotel on the beach itself, with a few private luxury homes and mansions elegantly dotting the surrounding hills and coastline.
The lack of crowds mean you will never have any trouble finding space to set up for your day of fun in the sun. The waters are usually gentle, which makes it a perfect play to play for the whole family. There are places to rent boogie boards, snorkel gear and so forth. You can rent wave runners and even try a Catamaran Cruise for a daytime snorkle tour or a beautiful sunset sailing trip.
Behind the beach is the brand new Margaritaville Hotel, which welcomes beach-goers to it’s great restaurants and laid-back atmosphere. Farther along the beach are a couple of other restaurants that are more casual and offer a great place to cool off under a palapa while taking in the magnificent ocean view. There is no better place to experience ‘Pura Vida’, which means ‘the good life’.

For the adventurous, the scuba diving in the area is indeed world-class. Just around the point are the Catalina Islands, which are home to a vast array of marine life. Expect to see White Tip Reef Sharks, Turtles, all kinds of colorful tropical fish. Many divers are awe-struck by the grace and beauty of the immense Giant Pacific Manta Ray!
Playa Flamingo boasts the largest port in the county and is becoming known around the world for it’s amazing deep-sea sport fishing. Tuna, Marlin, Special Places of Costa Rica has a terrific concierge service that will make all the necessary arrangements for you. Whatever your fancy, tuna, marlin, sword fish… Costa Rica has it all. The fishing expeditions tend to sell out so be sure to book yours early.
The charming town of Flamingo is unlike most of the towns you will find in Costa Rica – it has no village center! However, Flamingo’s few streets are nicely equipped with restaurants, a pharmacy, small grocery stores and shops etc. Flamingo is the quintessential beach resort town, with just enough amenities to look after the many vacation rentals that occupy the area.
For your visit to Costa Rica, staying in the Flamingo Beach area is a great choice for a home base. It is centrally located and a short ride to many must-see attractions such as zip lining, strolling through Las Catalinas, mountain biking, surfing at Playa Grande, or shopping in Tamarindo. Day trips include the mystic Monte Verde Cloud Forest, the majestic Arenal Volcano, adrenaline filled white water rafting, or hikes to amazing water falls.
Are you wondering why the beach is called “Flamingo Beach”? Well, it’s not because the places is home to flamingos, because there aren’t any. At all. A few times a year, when the weather conditions are just right, the beach turns a faint pink color. That would be amazing to see!
