Luna de Miel, Pacific Heights
Spectacular 4-BD Home with Pool, Dazzling Ocean Views

Luna de Miel in Pacific Heights, in the hills above Potrero, is a 4-bedroom home with an infinity pool and stunning ocean views.

Located just below the mountaintop El Castillo, Luna de Miel (meaning “honeymoon”) has a bird’s-eye view of the expansive sky, mountains, and never-ending Pacific coastline dotted with tiny islands. This is the view of every room at Luna de Miel.

There are four spacious bedrooms, each with its own sliding-glass door leading to an infinity pool that drops into a 180-degree view of the Pacific that will take your breath away. Each bedroom has custom-made furniture, its own spacious en-suite bathrooms and two entrances, one leading to a garden and mountain view and the other to the ocean view.

The Pink Room and Green Room both have a king-sized bed hand-made from teak, custom-built cabinetry and closets with ample space, and an en-suite bathroom with shower. Both rooms can be accessed via sliding-glass doors that open to a pool and ocean view or via a teak door that opens to a garden and mountain view. Both have a work space custom built into the cabinetry with a rattan work chair.

The Blue Room sleeps 5 comfortably, with a custom-made queen-sized bed and three custom-made European extra-long twin beds. All the beds are made from locally sourced teak. The room also has custom-built cabinetry and closets with ample space, and an en-suite bathroom with shower. The room can be accessed via sliding-glass doors that open to a pool and ocean view or via a teak door that opens to a garden and mountain view.

The Principal Bedroom has a hand-made king-sized bed made of teak, an en-suite bathroom that includes an outdoor-indoor shower offering unrestricted views of the mountain, garden, and ocean, an outdoor tub, sliding-glass doors that open to a sea view, and a teak door that opens to a garden and mountain view.

There are 4 spacious en-suite bathrooms connecting to all bedrooms, complete with custom-built cabinetry, sink, toilet, and rain shower. There is also a powder room with sink and toilet located in the living room.

All bedrooms are equipped with air conditioning for instant cooling, and with fans for those who prefer the sea breeze. The house is outfitted with Wi-Fi and four meshes to maximize full internet coverage, but internet connectivity on the mountain is often a bit spotty. A 55-inch smart TV is located in the main social area.

Designed for outdoor and indoor living

The house is a homage to outdoor and indoor living with tall ceilings, sliding-glass doors that all open into the ocean view, complete with an expansive living canvas of mountains, coastline, valleys and sky. The furniture is tropical modern, with an L-shape couch, lounge chair and coffee table. The room is designed to capture the theater of lighting, with dimmable spotlights to set the mood and a modern Wabi Sabi pendant lighting experience imported from an artisan in Vietnam. The kitchen has elegant and functional cabinetry and endless windows revealing new ocean views and perspectives.

The house is newly constructed with a view to seamlessly blending the tropical ultra-modern with the functional. The rooms are designed to capitalize on the view around you, with abundant windows, clean lines and minimalist sensibilities. The art is a nod to modern, tropical and indigenous living, including the family’s collection of rare Haitian and Papua New Guinean art and sculpture.

The kitchen has built-in custom cabinetry and island countertop with 4 barstools for morning coffees, juices and breakfast. All appliances are brand new and up to American or European codes and standards, with a Frigidaire fridge and dishwasher and Whirlpool washer and dryer. We turned to the experts for the latest in cooking technology, with an Italian stove, oven and microwave.

The main dining area is in a protected outdoor space with full ceiling coverage and nothing standing between the dining table and the view of the Pacific coast. The table itself is a large and expandable metal outdoor table that can seat up to 12.

Terrace and pool

The terrace has a large L-shape couch that can seat 8-10 guests, a coffee table and two plastic modern chairs. The couch and coffee table were custom-made for the house from locally sourced teak. There is an outdoor kitchen area with a BBQ grill, sink and cabinetry. There are 4 lounge chairs surrounding the infinity pool.

The house has one floor and does not share a space with neighbors or a caretaker, maximizing privacy and the feel of a coastal retreat.

The house has a large private infinity pool that gradually goes six feet deep and drops down into the coastline view, making you feel like you are swimming on top of the world. There’s also a unique outdoor tub for luxuriating al fresco.

Luna de Miel is able to offer sky-high ocean views because it is located toward the top of a mountain, so guests are strongly encouraged to rent an SUV or 4-wheel drive, as the road is a mix of dirt and pavement leading up a steep mountain.

Also, the house is designed around outdoor-indoor living flow, so expect to hear and see Costa Rican wildlife and nature around you, including the singing bird, geckos, and awe-inspiring sounds of howler monkeys.

Each bedroom is a separate independent unit, accessible from either the glass sliding doors facing the ocean view or the teak door leading to the garden and mountain view. The hallway leading to all the bedrooms is outdoors along the garden and mountain view.  Also, the primary dining area is in a highly protected outdoor space on the patio by the grill, which maximizes the view. And each bedroom is accessed through a covered and protected outdoor hallway on the mountainside of the house or from the patio area through the sliding-glass doors.

The biggest selling point of Luna de Miel is the unique indoor-outdoor flow, including the outdoor garden hallway facing the mountain view as well as the outdoor tub and shower in the principal bedroom. Every bedroom is a VIP room with the same VIP view. The view is its own magnificent living canvas changing with the light, sun and weather, but always promising an incredible panoramic show.

The house is the product of a collaboration between a celebrated Belgian architect living in San Jose, a Costa Rican contractor renowned for building exquisite modern homes on the Pacific Heights Mountain, and a couple of educators who first fell in love with Costa Rica on their honeymoon. The land where the house is situated was gifted to the couple, who have dedicated their lives and careers to helping low-income urban public schools. The playful bunk room was, in part, designed by the couple’s three young daughters. This family values progress, community, and adventure which can be felt throughout the home’s design, artwork and furnishing.

Luna Miel has an area of 478 square meters, or 5,145 square feet. It’s protected by a gate with access code.
