Tour Description
Arenal is Costa Rica’s most famous volcano, having been famously active for some 40 years, until it fell quiet in 2010. On the drive to this region we’ll be leaving the dry northwest, crossing the continental divide and observing a quick transition to lush tropical rainforest as we drive around the beautiful Laguna Arenal.
On our way, we’ll have a traditional Costa Rican breakfast of gallo pinto, meaning rice and beans with eggs.
Our first activity is a guided walk through a private rainforest reserve, an ambitious reforestation and research project that has earned a lot of appreciation worldwide.
We may spot sloths, agoutis, iguanas, basilisk lizards, caimans, butterflies, tree frogs, poison dart frogs, and we’ll see lots of colorful tropical birds. We’ll learn about the culture of the Malekus, one of the last indigenous groups in Costa Rica to maintain its ancient language and traditions. You’ll have the opportunity to support their community by buying some of their wooden artwork, including their exquisite masks.
Next we’ll visit La Fortuna Waterfall, Costa Rica’s most famous catarata. At 230 feet (70 meters) in height, with a beautiful blue pool at its base, this waterfall is visited by some 100,000 people a year.
There are close to 500 steps carved into the side of the mountain to get down to the base of the falls, and if you think it was hard getting down all those steps, wait till you have to walk back up. But the reward at the bottom, in the base of a canyon, is one of the most gorgeous waterfalls you’ll ever see, with a swimmable blue pool.
We’ll finish our day at the Ecotermales hot springs, relaxing our muscles in a variety of volcanic hot pools. We’ll also eat dinner — beef, chicken, pork or fish with rice, beans, vegetables and more.
Please note that transportation is included with this tour, and we cannot easily accommodate guests who wish to arrive separately. Our drivers and tour guides will be with our guests all day long on this multi-destination tour.
